Selling Real Estate in the Texas Hill Country

Information About Mason County

Mason locals fondly refer to the town (and county) as the "Gem of the Hill Country.” And rightly so.

We’re Texas Hill Country in its purest, undiluted, unpolluted, unspoiled form.

The abundance of wild game brings avid sportsmen into the community for seasonal hunts and fishing.

Nature lovers of all ages including entire families can canoe, kayak and fish on the Llano River. Great choices of Bed and Breakfast accommodations are located on the river and throughout the area including in town.

If you are a golfer, or want RV hookups among beautiful oak and pecan trees, check out Mason City Park. The 18-hole golf course satisfies even the most experienced golfers. Or go for a nice drive in the country to see James River Bat Cave which is a favorite of visitors certain times of the year. You’ll cross the Llano River where the James River comes in, and then as you get close to the bat cave location, you literally drive across the James River. In town, Heritage Park, just off the square, hosts outdoor spring and summer concerts.

Several Texas wineries are within easy driving distance from Mason, as well as historic buildings, historical roadside sites, and the Wildflower Farm in Fredericksburg (45 miles).
In the Spring, Texas Hill Country roads welcome an array of beautiful bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and other colorful wildflowers. Mason is on the much traveled "Bluebonnet Trail" and enjoys repeat and first-time visitors each year. Check us out, and stay a while! If "big city" shopping and sites interest you - drive two hours to Austin, San Antonio or San Angelo.

The school's very successful Mason Puncher sports teams, UIL academic teams and One-Act Play casts -- as well as 4-H and FFA teams and participants -- enjoy the consistent support of the entire community. Annual Tennis Tournaments host participants and enthusiasts from far and wide, with many of the games being played not only on the school courts, but on private courts at homes and on ranches in the area, as well as on the Courthouse Square.

Weekly cattle auctions are of interest to the curious where one will see real-life cowboys from the many working ranches in Mason and surrounding counties.

Mason is one of the few small Texas towns with its original movie theatre, The Odeon…and still shows first-run movies suitable for all ages. The monthly "Mason Country Opry" held in one of the longest continuously operating movie houses in the state, enjoys a large and enthusiastic audience of country music fans. Other live musical performances occur throughout the year.

Mason was home to Fred Gipson, well-known author of Old Yeller. A bronze sculpture of Old Yeller and the boy, Arlis, sits proudly in front of the library on Post Hill Street (2 blocks from the square and next to Heritage Park). We invite you to visit the restored Officer Quarters of Fort Mason (1851-1869) at the top of Post Hill, plus all around the square and off the square a plethora of shops await you, including antiques and collectibles, thrift stores, art galleries, and boutiques. See and learn about Mason County topaz (the Texas gemstone) at Country Collectibles, and enjoy all the history of the area. North of the square is the historical Seaquist Mansion which offers paid tours. And don’t miss the wine bar at Sandstone Cellars Winery on the southeast side of the square. Also, the 100-year-old Grosse Hardware building on the east side of the square has been converted into a barbecue joint and dance hall called Lea Lou Co-Op with country music bands on the weekend.

Mason is a small town of friendly folks who will make you feel at home. Don’t be surprised by locals smiling at you or saying hello or waving when they drive past you on the street. Y'all come see for yourself -- you will be glad you did!
